dressing up

I got roped into attending something called the hitRECord Fall Formal tonight in downtown L.A.  I don’t know anything about it except that it seems kinda hipstery, my childhood TV crush, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is somehow involved, and that it is a somewhat fancy affair.

I haven’t really dressed up for anything since I lost my job.  I’ve barely worn heels since I lost my job, honestly.  I’m feeling a little off my dress-up game.  But after much hemming and hawing I think I figured out what I’ll wear tonight:

Forever 21 dress and scarf, H&M Divided coat, Target tights, GoJane.com platforms.

I hope this will do me all right.  It would be kind of embarrassing if I showed up and everyone else was done up to the nines…but these days I think I only really go up to six or seven.

i might be four years old

Isn’t it awkward when you’re dressed almost exactly the same as a four-year-old girl at the pharmacy?  Something tells me I should take that as a sign — a sign this outfit is totally awesome!

Topshop dress, Funtasma saddle shoes, Forever 21 cardigan.

This jersey dress from Topshop is so easy to throw on; the detail in the back makes it look fancier than it feels to wear it.  Add some red lipstick — instant outfit.

The best part, though, is my handmade wild eyeball bracelets:

These are for sale in my Etsy shop, but I love them so much I kind of want to keep them for myself.  I definitely have to go back and get more of these insane glass beads.

My boyfriend likes to tease me by saying I am totally a member of Omega Mu, the geeky girl sorority from Revenge of the Nerds.  After years of trying to hide from my innate nerdiness, at 25 I am ready to embrace it.  I always feel oddly comfortable working my version of the prim weird nerd girl look:

hello tuesday

My barista told me I looked “very New York” this morning, but I don’t know if he’s ever been to New York.  I’m feeling kinda more…Toontown, to be honest.

Mossimo for Target cardigan, MaxStudio bandage dress, Stop Staring! patent belt, Heritage 1981 scarf, Breckelle’s platform heels, Classic Hardware heart charm bracelet.

I’m wearing these tiny silly Hello Kitty earrings meant for babies — three pairs for 99¢.  Can’t beat that.  I’m not even that into Hello Kitty, and I still couldn’t resist.  She’s just so cute!


Also working another pair of press-on nails today…I’m admittedly a semi-convert at this point.  These are by Fing’rs Edge Hardcore Nail Addict, which is a pretty intense name:


I like ‘em though!  Easy to apply, and they look nice and don’t feel weird or anything.  I trimmed down the thumbnails a bit; for some reason they always look way longer and creepily squared off compared to the other nails in the set.  They’re mega tacky, of course, but at this point you should know Tacky is one of my many middle names.

barbie girl

Contrary to what my euphoric expression in the above photo might lead you to believe, I was never big into Barbies as a kid, choosing instead to split my time between My Little Pony and a pretty epic Brio wooden train set.  Still, as you may recall, when I came across the “Doll For A Day” plastic headband in the Barbie Collector catalog,  I was like, I want that.

So I got it.  And, just as I suspected, it’s totes cute.


I’m still not a big Barbie fan though.  She seems kind of stuck-up.

Am I the only one who gets mad when American Apparel comes out with really cute stuff?  I don’t want to buy shit from them because Dov Charney is such a creepy perv, but then they put out this red lace dress that is totally giving Erdem Spring ’11 and my morals get all compromised.

Leaf flower lace dress, $52.  It also comes in black, cream, yellow, and orange.  Damn you, American Apparel!  I can’t quit you!
